Nancy Wilson, a jazz singer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on 20 February 1937 to Olden Wilson, an ironworker. was employed for a lengthy time as a housekeeper. Nancy was the oldest of six children. Nancy grew up listening to records from her father as well as his passion for music. Nancy knew that she was going to become a performer at the age of just four years old. She began developing her talents by participating in the church choir. After high school, she began to appear often in Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. The same year, Nancy started to work at nightclubs. In less than a month she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley saw her singing and instantly took her on. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records and in that same year she released her first single. Guess Who I Saw today Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Following the influence of Adderley, Nancy Wilson shifted her focus from R&B into jazz. Their 1962 collaboration Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to prominence and her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth in 1963. Following that year it led to her being booked at New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
