The Jazz singer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born February 20, 1937, in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio. Her parents were ironworker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a domestic servant. Nancy was the eldest of six kids. The father of Nancy was a fan of music and loved to play records with his children at home. This had a great influence on her as a child. It was clear that she wanted to become a performer by the time she was just four years old. She began developing her talents by participating in the choir at church. When she was 15, she won an audition on television and was able to regularly appear on The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while still in High School. In the same year, she started to work in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she completed high school and was enrolled at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. In 1956 she made her first album with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut album via Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to travel for a trip to New York in order to advance her career. She visited The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Within a month she got a job singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx which was where her agent was introduced to her and signed her. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records. That same year she issued her first single. Guess Who I Saw Today. Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Under the direction of Cannonball Adderley Wilson's direction, she began to focus on R&B and then shifted her focus towards torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped make her a star and her hit Tell Me the Truth was released in 1963. This brought her a gig at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America the following year and she was a household name.
